Sport psychology: Now is the Time to Invest in Yourself
How sport psychology can help you become a better athlete
Right now we are in very unprecedented times, and for everyone their lives have been turned upside down. The world of sports, has seen event after event been cancelled or postponed. On top of that the way most athletes deal with stress is through their sport, and working out or training and that has also been taken away, at least in the normal form it usually takes. This is very difficult, and requires a shift in mindset and focus to make sure that everything that is within your control is still being done to be ready to go when things do resume. One of those areas is the mind.
I am obviously a bit biased with the importance of sport psychology and the mind on performance, but I know you also understand its importance. The interesting thing is that this time with no practices or games provides an opportunity to develop yourself in a way you have always wanted. Most athletes I talk to want more inner confidence, less performance anxiety, to not have their identity tied to their results or performance and to have more mental toughness, to name a few.
All of these things require time, require inner work. Most of the time while athletes I work with are able to carve out some time to work on these things, others can’t find the time. Time is definitely one of the push backs I get. Most people are focused on their physical performance and developing it, and spending most of their time there, with little or no time dedicated to their mental game, and yet they understand its importance and know that when things often don’t go the way they want the internal aspects play a large role.
Now is the Time
Well time is no longer an obstacle. There is plenty of time to work on yourself and develop things within you that will benefit you long term. So my question to you is what are you doing about it? What have you decided to dedicate working on during this period that will ultimately help you as an athlete and person? Are you diving in and working on the things you have always wanted? This period of time is not only good because of the time available but it is also good because it has created situations that can help us practice. Dealing with uncertainty, stress, negative thoughts, and anxiety. If you can take this situation and use it to help you deal with these emotions and self talk for the future you will be better at dealing with it in your sport down the road.
There is no time like the present to start the process of working on elements of yourself that will give you a return on your investment down the road if you fully commit.
